iOS vs Android
With the new software platforms being announced and then released, the companies have gone head to head in the platform war. iPhone 5 was announced just yesterday while the Android Jelly Bean was released with the Nexus 7 tablet in June earlier this year. The jelly bean will however come to play when the Galaxy Note 2 is released in Q4 as Samsung’s galaxy series is the biggest seller of Android smartphones.
The Apple and Galaxy series flagship phones have the hardware in them to store some great apps which bodes well for the mobile app developers. From what I have seen, there isn’t an application yet in either of the app markets for both these phone makers to utilise their memory or the CPU completely. This should give the app developers across the globe enough flexibility to develop better designed apps to utilize their hardware without worrying about the size of the application too much.
Coming to the platforms head to head, Gartner report released its Q2 2012 mobile sales unit report, ranking vendors and operating systems for mobile devices. As per the report in Q2, of the mobile devices sold 64.1% of them were powered by Android whilst 18.8% were powered by Apples iOS. Google has made huge strides compared to Q2 last year whereas Apple iOs has remained the same. It is important to keep in mind that the rise in Android sales could be a result of Nokia and RIM losing around 20% of their market share rather than a win against Apple.
Anyways, we now know that for the next few years that unless some dramatic new innovation is released by another vendor Google and Apple will control most of the market. Mobile app developers could largely concentrate on developing apps for the ecosystem of these two giants. Companies wanting to reach out to their market can build apps for these two platforms knowing that they could reach out to about 80% of the market that use Apple and Google.
